NORTH ATHENS, GREECE, FIRES “OUT OF CONTROL” TRAPS RESIDENTS AND RESPONDERS
UPDATE: 20.00 HRS
A forest fire that broke out today near Athens forced the evacuation of thousands of people from three suburbs of the Greek capital, with reports of destroyed houses, cut roads and disruptions in the electricity supply.
SITREP 3RD AUGUST 2021 - NEWS 1740 hrs reported this afternoon
An unknown number of residents, firefighters and policemen are reportedly trapped between two fronts of a major wildfire in northern Athens that has already destroyed homes in the suburb of Varymbombi and is spreading to Thrakomakedones.
“The blaze is out of control,” Attica’s deputy governor for civil protection, Vassilis Kokkalis, told the state-run Athens-Macedonian News Agency (ANA-MPA), warning that the fire is spreading and may reach the suburb of Adames.
According to reports, the 100 emergency line has received at least 14 calls by residents asking for help.
“There are too many fronts,” said Kokkalis, adding that strong winds in the area are stoking the blaze and also making it hard for water-dumping aircraft, which will have to land at nightfall.
“It’s a tragedy; the fire has reached Varymbombi Square,” Spyros Vrettos, the mayor of Acharnon – to which the suburb belongs – told Kathimerini.
Greece’s power grid operator on Tuesday warned that dozens of suburbs in eastern Athens were at risk of being left without electricity as a result of a major wildfire in the capital’s north.
The warning comes as temperatures in Athens and other parts of the country soared above 40 degrees Celsius on Tuesday in the worst heatwave Greece has experienced in several decades.
“Everything humanly possible is being done by the operator’s staff to minimize the impact on consumers for the duration of the event,” the management of the Independent Power Transmission Operator (ADMIE), said in an announcement issued on Tuesday afternoon.
Authorities temporarily closed a small part of the national highway Athens-Lamia in north-eastern Attica early Tuesday afternoon due to the big fire front of Varympompi. Some two hours earlier, residents of Varympompi and Kryoneri Attica, were urged to shut doors, windows and chimneys after a thick black cloud emerged from a blaze in the nearby forest on the foothills of Parnitha Mt.
The Civil Protection message via Emergency number <112>; also advised locals to be ready to evacuate if necessary.

The Importance of Watching

“But take heed to yourselves, lest your hearts be weighed down with carousing, drunkenness, and cares of this life, and that Day come on you unexpectedly.  For it will come as a snare on all those who dwell on the face of the whole earth.  Watch therefore, and pray always that you may be counted worthy to escape all these things that will come to pass, and to stand before the Son of Man.”

Luke 21:34-36
